Day 4: The Depth of Sacrifice

Day 4: The Depth of Sacrifice
  • Scripture: Matthew 27:33-35, Hebrews 9:22
  • Devotional:
Matthew's account of the crucifixion is stark and brief: "And when they had crucified him..." This understatement emphasizes the utter depravity of humanity in rejecting and killing the Son of God. Jesus, fully God and fully man, was the perfect, sinless sacrifice required to atone for our sins.
The Old Testament sacrificial system, with its emphasis on the shedding of blood, foreshadowed Christ's ultimate sacrifice. Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness. Jesus willingly endured the agony of the cross, bearing the weight of our sin, so that we might be reconciled to God. This is a love beyond our comprehension.
    • Application: Spend time in quiet reflection on the cross. Meditate on the physical and spiritual suffering Jesus endured. Allow the reality of His sacrifice to deepen your appreciation for His grace and motivate you to live a life of worship.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we are humbled by the depth of Your love and the sacrifice of Your Son. Thank You for paying the price for our sins, a price we could never pay ourselves. Help us to live in gratitude for Your grace and mercy. Amen.
